i think i use exclamation points more when i’m too tired to actually express enthusiasm with words or when i want to make a sentence sound less sentimental. exclamation points! so flaccid on the inside.

In other news, I am in the midst of writing an abstract of my thesis for inclusion in the upcoming pamphlet of student work from the architecture school. This is a task I am currently loathing right now, mostly because the piece that I pulled together for April 12th is, in my opinion, almost entirely a p.o.s. The only bits that I can certainly claim out of it is the feeling that there could be something good in there.

In the meantime I am trying to figure out what to do with that part. Most likely it will have to do with Colin Rowe, who was more thoroughly tackled by Tony Vidler in Histories of the Immediate Present (which coincidentally would have been a much better starting point had my thesis advisor been Spyros). I am definitely considering a trip out to Austin, TX to see what is in the archives at the Charles Moore Foundation. One of my contacts there claims that Rowe’s library made it out there—something I’m very curious to see, especially for the chance to read some of his annotations in the margins of his favorite books and to peek at his personal correspondence with his parents. I was able to read one letter that he wrote back to his folks when he was traveling around Mexico in the early fifties… and I hope that there are more letters like it there.

the future, my dear…

starfleet academy

… is made of shit!

Earlier today, I was walking through the grounds of Starfleet Academy, which in real life, in the real world, is part of a sewage treatment plant. The design for the building at right is the Tillman Water Treatment and Reclamation Center in Encino, CA by Anthony Lumsden. Images of the buliding are below. Images of the poo are below below.

For fear my hands should be considered idle, and the proverbial employment attributed to them, I have thought it advisable to be doing something. It has occurred to me that to note down some of the facts I have learned by experience in the electrical world would be employment, congenial to myself and at the same time serviceable to others.

it’s stupid how fast you get used to people hanging out on your back porch. who knew telling clean jokes could become such a pasttime?
